Winter Pom Pom Wreath DIY Supplies
- Pom Pom Maker
- 2-3 skeins of medium weight cream yarn
- Scissors
- 16″ foam wreath form
- 3-4 sheets of white felt (8″x10″ each)
- Bottlebrush trees
- Vintage Putz house
- Ribbon
- Hot glue gun and glue
Winter Pom Pom Wreath DIY Directions
Step 1: Cover foam wreath form in white felt
You will want to cover your wreath form in case any of it shows through the pom poms. I used the pre-cut 8″x 10″ sheets of felt that I found at the craft store. Cut the felt out and cover the top, bottom and sides of the wreath from with the felt. Use the hot glue to adhere the fabric to the wreath form.
I also cut a loop of felt and placed it on the back of the wreath for hanging. Keep the loop short and the pom poms will hide it when finished!
Step 2: Make yarn pom poms
Now, start making your pom poms. This can take a little bit of time. So, turn on a movie and the time will pass in a flash! Each pom pom takes about 2-3 minutes to make. And depending on the size of your wreath, you may need up to 50 pom poms! My wreath used a 16″ form and I ended up using 41 pom poms.

And if you like the look of this wreath but feel like making all the pom poms is too much work, be sure to check out my Winter Village Wreath! Same look with less work.
Step 3: Attach Pom Poms to your wreath form
The next step is to begin gluing the pom poms to the wreath form. Using the hot glue, attach pom poms as close to the center of each one as possible. This will make it so they don’t droop when hung up.
Start on the flat front of the wreath and then fill in with the inside and outside edges. There will end up being 3 rows of pom poms.
Step 4: Decorate your pom pom wreath with accessories
I wanted to create a welcoming and cozy winter scene on my wreath. I used one of my vintage-inspired Putz houses and a few bottlebrush trees. Simply glue the items in place. And finish with a pretty satin ribbon!

How many pom poms did it take to make this wreath? Lovely job.
ashley
for my wreath, I used 41 pom poms – took about 2 hours to make them – so put on a movie and enjoy! 😉

I love your wreath! What type of yarn did you use? The single pompom in the picture looks thick and super fluffy! I would like to make one like that! Thank you!
ashley
Hi Debbi! I used a medium weight cream yarn. The trick to making them puffy is to brush the ends lightly with a small comb or brush afterwards. This will make them extra fluffy looking. If you have a barbie brush or other doll brush, these work great!

Thank you Ashley! i will give it a try!
Kimberly Collins
Where did you buy the puts house and the bottle brush trees.
ashley
Hi Kimberly! I added the links to the Putz houses and the bottlebrush trees – under supplies.
Brandi Bumgarner
Hello!! What size wreath foam did you use?
Thank you!
Brandi
ashley
Hi Brandi! I used a 16″ foam wreath form.

Hi Ashley! Love this project and looking forward to doing it with some friends this weekend! Do you think it will work out the same if I have a round wreath form as opposed to the flat one you used? I haven’t had any luck finding a flat one yet.
ashley
Yes I think it will work just fine! I also just published an updated pom pom wreath today. Check it out!
Jennifer
I’m confused about where the loop is. In your pictures it looks like it’s on the front? Also, if you’re using a standard hook or even a nail wouldn’t the loop need need to be sideways instead dog flat?
ashley
Hi Jennifer. That picture is of the back of the wreath. The entire wreath is covered in felt. The loop is hot glued flat on the wreath at the base of the fabric loop and then you can twist it to hook onto a nail or door hook. You can’t adhere it sideways. You could also just use a piece of yarn but it won’t be as strong. Or you can sew on a plastic ring from the craft store.
Jamie
What exact yarn did you use? I got some today and it isn’t looking at all how yours does
ashley
Hi Jamie. I used a chunky cream yarn. Then after I made the pom poms I used a barbie brush to fluff the ends a bit. To get rid of that freshly cut look. I hope that helps! Have fun!
Catherine Venable
I bought a medium weight yarn and only got 4 large Pom poms out of 1 skein. I think I need a chunkier yarn. Can you share the number of the chunky yarn you used? Like was it a #6 or is that too big for the Pom Pom maker?
Thanks!!
ashley
Hi Catherine! I don’t have the yarn anymore that I used for the pom poms, but I have used all weights and had success. The thicker the yarn, the thicker it will be and not as fluffy. If you aren’t getting enough pom poms out of your skein, maybe try making them less dense to yield more.

What size Pom Pom maker did you use?
ashley
Hi Kate! I used a 2.5″ dia pom pom maker

I had intended to leave a compliment for you about your creative, stunning pom-pom wreath. I happen to love neutral Christmas decor, particularly since it’s perfect during Christmas and I can leave it up to keep our home looking festive through the end of February. I appreciate the supply list you so generously provided for your readers and appreciate your willingness to share your creativity. Merry Christmas, Ashley!

Can you tell me where the beige ribbon is from that you used for the bow?
ashley
It came on a package and I reused it. But you can find great ribbon on Etsy. This particular ribbon is silk.
Jennifer
Hello!
Btw I love the wreath! I just have a question. You said “Pom Pom maker “. Can I just purchase Pom poms and where would I do so at??? Thank you so much
ashley
Hi Jennifer. Happy new year. I think you can purchase pom poms on etsy. You will want them to be at least 3″ in diameter.
