Spanish style Gin and Tonics

On our trip to England last summer, we spent 10 days sipping on the most delicious gin and tonics. Given that this cocktail originated in London, it’s no wonder that they have perfected the recipe!
But long gone are the boring glasses filled with only clear liquid. Now, these Spanish style gin and tonics have taken over the scene! Large wine glasses filled with ice and aromatic herbs set apart these cocktails from its predecessors.
These Spanish gin and tonics are not only beautiful, but they taste insanely good too! The most important part to making a great gin and tonic is to use the highest quality ingredients. Craft distillery gins and aromatic tonic water are the key components to a great tasting cocktail.
Which gin is best for gin and tonic?
For a great cocktail, you will want to use a high quality gin. Because there are only 2 ingredients in gin and tonics, make the ingredients high quality!
I like St. George Gin or Hendrick’s Gin. We also came to love Portobello Road Gin on our trip to London last summer. Their distillery is on the famous Portobello Road in London, hence the name.
Which tonic water is best for gin and tonic?
My favorite tonic water is by Fever Tree. They have a vast array of different flavors and varieties. My favorites include their Elderflower Tonic Water and Aromatic Tonic Water (which is pink!). Their mixers are made without the use of corn syrup, which is what you will find in the grocery store brand versions.
What herbs go well with gin?
A Spanish gin and tonic isn’t complete without some “accessories”. Because gin is a very herbaceous spirit, pairing herbs as garnish with your cocktail is a wonderful complement.
I like to use basil, thyme, rosemary and mint. But really any herb would be beautiful served in your gin and tonic as garnish.
How much tonic is in a gin and tonic?
A good ratio for the perfect gin and tonic is 2 to 1. So 2 parts good quality tonic water to 1 part gin. This makes it not too strong, and the most refreshing cocktail.
Gin and Tonic Recipe
The key to the best Spanish gin and tonic is to serve it very cold. Lots of ice and make sure your tonic water is refrigerated before mixing.
In London, gin and tonics were served with the gin in a glass poured over ice and the individual tonic water bottle served separately so that you can add as much as you desired.
This also makes them great for parties. You can prepare the glasses ahead of time with the aromatics. Then let the guests fill their glasses with ice, gin and finally top with tonic water.
