If you are new here, hi! I am Ashley, wife and mom to two young kids. We live in the suburbs of San Francisco and we have been updating our California ranch since we moved in 9 years ago. My husband is a contractor – follow along as we tackle our home renovation one project at a time!
Fall Decorating Ideas
Now, fall is my favorite season. I just can’t get enough pumpkins, sweaters, cozy mornings and crisp autumn leaves! And I want to share with you some easy and simple fall decorating ideas to transition your home from summer to fall.
As the days get shorter and you start noticing that lovely crispness to the air, fall is sneaking in! I absolutely love fall and I know I’m not alone!
With each season, I like to change the feel inside my home. Just a few tweaks with accessories and decor that reflect the changing season.
Fall is all about creating a cozy and inviting home. And it’s also time to add back some of those Hygge elements. Let’s talk about how to transition your decor from summer to fall with these fall decorating ideas.
How To Decorate For Fall
The first step to switching out your decor from summer to fall is to remove all the seasonal decorations. Then, you are left with a blank slate and can start from scratch. This is much easier than changing things little by little or item by item.
Next, start pulling your fall decor that you may want to use. I love to go through my items and see how I can reuse and repurpose items for a new use!
For example, this vintage champagne bucket makes the perfect vessel for some end-of-season hydrangeas. Reusing existing decor is a simple and easy fall decorating idea.
I love taking what I already own and changing it up for each season. I very rarely buy new decor. And if I do, I use for it for many years to come.
When starting to decorate for the new season, try and stick with a color scheme. In the fall I am drawn to darker colors. So, when I started pulling together items I wanted to use for my fall home, I kept to a palette of green, black and gold.
How To Make Your Home Cozy For Fall
An easy way to transition to fall is to switch out the fabrics and textures in your home accessories.
Here I switched out the pillows from my Coastal Summer Home decor to these rich and moody colors for fall. I am very drawn to this rust color for autumn.
And you may have noticed that I changed out my summer hats that were hanging on this wall. I found some vintage baskets and replaced the hats.
I love the texture and color they add to the room without having to commit to artwork. And the colors mimic my new fall pillows. Keeping the color scheme simple and finding different ways to add to it with textures from baskets or blankets is a great decorating idea for fall.
To make your home feel cozy for fall, try some of the following ideas:
- add warm, rich colors through your accessories and pillows
- provide a basket filled with soft blankets and throws (faux fur is extra cozy)
- bring in some greenery with houseplants
- layer rugs on rugs
- add soft lighting through candles or adding dimmers to your switches

Fall Dining Room Decor
Another room that I like to add some seasonal touches to is my dining room. You can see my Modern Farmhouse Fall Dining Room from last year. (P.S. it’s one of my favorites ever, so it’s worth paying a visit.)
This year I kept things pretty simple and used this gorgeous flower arrangement left over from my Outdoor Fall Table as the centerpiece here.
This fall centerpiece is simple. Because sometimes, less is more! I placed a simple cream runner down the center of the table. Then I added some faux antlers on either side and dotted the area with these gold votives.
I just love the bold colors from the dahlias. Can you believe all of these flowers are from my mom’s garden? I let the flowers take center stage and the table is perfect for impromptu get togethers with family and friends!
