Easy Summer Mantel with Peonies
2020 has provided quite the unexpected turn of events. We have been quarantined since March 17 here in California. That means, more time at home. And a change in scenery for summer was in due order!
And by change in scenery, I mean changing the decor. I love to go with a simplified version of my style for summer. I don’t know if it’s because of the stifling heat that we get, but lighter, brighter and less of everything is what makes my home feel fresh for summer.
So, this year, I knew I wanted my fireplace decor to be just that: simple, easy and clean looking. What I love most about this easy summer mantel is that I can change the flowers out weekly with fresh cut greens from the yard, some garden roses or, as the summer ramps up, hydrangeas.
Summer Fireplace Decor
All that you need to recreate this easy summer mantel are some bottles and some peonies. Or, like I said, you could use any summer flower that you have in your yard or that you find at the grocery store.
I found these pretty green bottles at Target and filled them with peonies from Trader Joe’s.

What to do with your fireplace in the summer
Aside from creating an easy summer mantel, decorating your fireplace during the summer months can be a challenge too. During the winter months, our fireplace takes center stage and all the furniture is arranged to make the most of the warmth.
So, in the summer, I like to move furniture arrangement and place a bench or stools in front of it. This year I found this cute rattan dog bed and knew it would look perfect in front of our fireplace. Romeo likes it too!
A Personal Note
Since writing this post, some disturbing events have unfolded here in the United States. I can’t publish this post without addressing what is a very real and important issue.
The senseless killing of George Floyd is unthinkable and has stopped us in our path. It has allowed us to stop and analyze how we think and how we act. It has provided a place for uncomfortable conversations, a place for growth and learning.
Now is a time for change. Prejudice over race, religion or sexuality is intolerable in our house. This is a firm belief for me personally. But we need to do more than just talk with our children. We need to also lead by example.
I read a good quote today from Dr. Margaret A. Hagerman that suggested the best way to teach your children is through everyday behaviors. The neighborhood you live in, the school they attend, and the extra curricular activities they participate in really affect how kids understand race.
This is just one step in the right direction. There is so much room for learning, understanding and growth.
As Ashlee Eiland says, “Say what you need to on social media. Then put down your phone & pick up your life. Not many will see you learning, confessing, repenting, uprooting, re-tooling, forgiving, inviting, empowering. But we will see its fruit. The hidden work is the heart work is the hard work.”
