I have been looking for fun, bright colored ornaments to decorate my tree this year. And I have found some beautiful versions, but they are all so expensive! So, I decided to make my own using melted crayons and clear glass ornaments. I will show you how easy it is to make these DIY Christmas ornaments for less than $1!
DIY Melted Crayon Christmas Ornaments
I love the holidays and the bright colored baubles that come along with my favorite holiday. This year I plan to decorate my tree in bright reds and pinks. Finding the right colored ornaments has been a little harder than I thought. So, I decided to create my own.

The best part about these DIY Christmas ornaments is that you can make them in any shade you desire! You can do a combination of colors or keep it simple with one of two shades.
DIY Crayon Ornament Supplies
To make these melted crayon craft ornaments you will need just a few supplies. That’s what’s great about this project. Nothing fancy necessary!
- Crayons (peeled and broken into 1/4″ pieces)
- Clear glass ornaments – any size
- Hair dryer
- Winter gloves
How to Make DIY Christmas Ornaments
Ok, so let’s get started making this fun Christmas craft. First, peel off the paper from the crayons and break the crayons into 1/4″ pieces. You can use scissors to cut them and make this step much easier.
Next, take the top off your glass ornament and place about 8-10 pieces of crayons in.
You will want to pick 2-3 colors. If you choose too many, it will just turn brown. I chose colors that were pretty close in shade to make an ombre effect. But it would also be pretty to choose colors that are very different to create contrast.
Next, put your mitten or winter glove onto the hand that will holding the ornament. Start heating up the crayons using your hair dryer on the high setting.
As the wax melts, turn the ornament. Rotating and swirling until you get the desired effect. When you are done, dump the unused crayon bits out onto a paper towel.
Melted Crayon Craft Tips
I have some tips for making these melted crayon ornaments turn out just right.
I found that when heating the crayons, rotate the ornaments in a circular direction. Gently tilt the ornament as you go to make the crayon cover the inside of the ornament. IF you mix the colors too much it doesn’t have the same effect.
Also, I used ornaments that had an iridescent finish. This made the swirled crayon effect that much more vibrant and I loved the result!
You can also add some very fine glitter after the crayons start to melt to add a glittery finish to these DIY Christmas ornaments!
