Creative Kitchen Sink Cabinet Organization Ideas and Solutions that will make the most use of your space! See how I transformed my small kitchen sink cabinet into a tidy space using organizational products.
Each fall, before the kids head back to school, I like to tackle a few organization projects. This helps our family get ready for a more structured routine and have the house working more efficient too!
And here are a few of my favorite organizing projects I have tackled in the past:
How To Organize Kitchen Drawers
Now, one area that I have put off for awhile now is the cabinet under our kitchen sink. This space has always been an organizational disaster. Not only does this cabinet house the water filter, garbage disposal and cleaning products, it also is where we store our garbage can.
As you can see, the space in the cabinet is tight. And with the water filter and garbage disposal, there’s not much room for too much else. Anything that got shoved into the back recesses of the cabinet seemed to disappear forever. Ugh!
But, with a few creative organizational solutions, I whipped this cabinet into shape and I am so happy with the result! It took me less than an hour to do and I can’t believe I didn’t tackle this project sooner!
I’ll share with you the process and my favorite kitchen sink cabinet organization products as well.
Kitchen Sink Cabinet Organization Transformation
To tackle this organizing project, the first thing I did was take everything out. I always find it’s best to start with a blank slate. Are you the same way?
I sorted through what was stored in the cabinet and eliminated items that I no longer needed. The plastic bags I moved to our garage and placed in a handy holder that attaches to the wall.
Next, I cleaned the inside of the cabinet. A quick vacuum of the corners and a wipe down of the floor with warm, soapy water got the kitchen sink cabinet ready for organization.
Now, I placed this shelf liner made specifically for under the kitchen sink. Water can cause serious damage to the base of your cabinets and this really helps protect it and keep it clean too. You can see that our cabinets had some damage from a previous leak. So, I want to make sure we protect the boards from further damage.
How To Shop For Under Sink Storage
Once the cabinet was cleaned out, it was ready to tackle the organization of this space. Here are my tips for shopping for organizing products, no matter the project.
- Determine what you need to store in the space. There are so many great products designed with specific storage solutions in mind.
- Measure the space. Take measurements of the width, depth and height of the space you are shopping for. Take into account the opening of the cabinet or drawer as well as any obstacles in the way.
- Think outside the box. Just because something is designed for a specific product or area doesn’t mean it won’t work for what you are organizing too.
When shopping for my kitchen sink cabinet organization, I had to work with some big obstacles that lay inside the cabinet. I knew there was wasted space under the disposal and water filter, but I just didn’t know how I could better organize it. I saw a few pull-out organizers that were designed for under the kitchen sink, but because our cabinet is a bit different, these didn’t work.
But, I thought, why not create my own version using a pull-out shelf and containers to organize the shelf and the space inside the cabinet?
Under Kitchen Sink Pull Out Storage Idea
See, you don’t have to have custom cabinetry to maximize the space under your kitchen sink. There are so many great products on the market that can help you customize the space to fit your needs.
I used this pull-out kitchen wire shelf that allows me to place taller items at the front of the shelf where we have the height and shorter items in the back where we are restricted by the sink appliances.
The pull-out shelves really allow you to maximize your storage and keep it organized too! We all know that deep cabinets can mean there is a black hole where everything seems to disappear – ha!
I used a plastic caddy at the front of the shelf to organize cleaning products and sponges. This can be pulled out to clean other areas of the house as well. And the back of the shelf holds smaller products that I don’t use as often.
On the other side of the cabinet, I replaced our garbage can with a slimmer, pull-out version. By having the can fixed in place, I am able to make more room in between the trash can and the pull-out shelf. I fixed the trash slightly off center of the left cabinet and I am now able to fit two wire baskets in that space that hold the dishwasher pods and soap refills.
Can you believe the transformation that was made with just a few organizational products and 1 hour of time!
